Rhonda Deland is a multi-media artist living in Montauk, New York. Originally from southern California, she grew up as a competitive figure skater, dancer, doodler and lover of all things design. She received her BA in communications and design at Ithaca College in NY. The next 2 decades formed her career as an art director/graphic designer in advertising and retail for brands like Saks Fifth Avenue, Avon, KitchenAid and Victorias Secret in New York City. After becoming a mom, she returned to night school at the New York Academy of Art in Tribeca to continue her art education in 2017/18. Starting in oil, moving on to acrylic and finally landing on watercolor as her preferred medium, she slowly developed her fluid style while training under watercolor artist Joan Iaconetti.

Soon after, she moved her family to Montauk. Rhonda’s painting style slowly developed into what it is today; fluid, marble-like, watercolor paintings, rich in color and texture, using geometric shapes and patterns, heavily influenced by her travels and love of architecture, interior design and astronomy.

artist statement. “My work explores the intersection of illusion and reality, creating landscapes in watercolor that mimic the intricate textures and patterns found in marble. I am fascinated by the way marble veining and natural formations can evoke both the stillness of stone and the movement of the earth. Through the fluidity of watercolor, I attempt to capture the essence of marble’s timeless beauty while challenging the viewer’s perception—inviting them to question whether they are seeing a true piece of stone or a painted illusion. In this way, I aim to blur the boundaries between nature, material, and representation, creating an experience that encourages curiosity and introspection.”
